This is an Episodic show. You can listen to it in any order, but episode one is always a great place to start.

Full Episode description

The earthquakes of 1811-1812 that struck the American heartland are largely forgotten today, despite being the most destructive series of earthquakes in North America in recent history. They occurred in the central Mississippi Valley, centered around the city of New Madrid Missouri, but were felt as far away as New York City, Boston, Montreal, and Washington D.C. The shock waves were felt from the East Coast to the Rocky Mountains, and from southern Canada to northern Mexico.

From December 16, 1811 through March of 1812 there were over 2,000 earthquakes in the central Midwest, and between 6,000-10,000 earthquakes in the Bootheel of Missouri where New Madrid is located near the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. In the known history of the world, no other earthquakes have lasted so long or produced so much evidence of damage as the New Madrid earthquakes.
