On this week’s episode, Carlos Hernandez, author of Rick Riordan Presents' SAL AND GABI BREAK THE UNIVERSE (a Kirkus Best Book of 2019 and the 2020 Pura Belpré Author Award ) is matched with not one, but two creative rockstars: 10 year old twins Siri and Zarana! The twins, who love to write and paint, bring along twice the imagination to create a story seed about a magic paintbrush that makes whatever you paint, real! Maybe too real! Join host Betsy Bird as she follows Carlos and the twins to the Children’s Museum of the Arts in NYC where they collaborate on growing their story idea while making some 3D art of their own. Then sit back for storytime as Carlos narrates the story he wrote, inspired by their meeting: “Citaria’s Paintbrush.”
On this bonus episode, host Betsy Bird interviews Rajani LaRocca, author of the middle grade fantasy novel MIDSUMMER'S MAYHEM. Go behind the scenes as Rajani recounts what it was like growing Liyana’s story seed into the modern fairytale, "Aina and the Mirror" on Episode 5, "The Hungry Mirror." They also talk about favorite snacks, the weirdest (but effective!) places to write a novel, writing tips, and Rajani’s not just one, but two successful careers: she’s an author and a doctor!
Mirror, Mirror, can I get a bite of that? On this week's episode, 12 year old Liyana collaborates with Rajani LaRocca (author of "Midsummer’s Mayhem," a Kirkus Best Book of 2019 and long-listed for the 2020 Massachusetts Book Award as a must-read title in MG/YA Literature) to brainstorm her story idea about what happens when a girl who is a misfit in her family of celebrities finds a magic mirror. Join host Betsy Bird as she follows Rajani and Liyana to Pippin Vintage, a NYC antique store, where they go hunting for inspiration, and then collaborate to grow Liyana's story seed into a modern fairytale filled with Youtube stars, biracial characters, a particularly delicious Bengali snack, and of course, magic. Finally, sit back for storytime as Rajani narrates the original story she wrote inspired by her collaboration with Liyana: “Aina and the Mirror."
On this bonus episode, host Betsy Bird and Aram Kim chat about growing Cici’s electric story seed into the original superhero caper "Adventures of Electric Kitty: The Blackout." You’ll also get writing tips, and hear how Aram Kim got her start as an award-winning author and illustrator of picture books including NO KIMCHI FOR ME and her latest LET'S GO TO TAEKWONDO.
This week’s episode brings together seven year old Cici and Aram Kim, (author and illustrator of Bank Street’s Best Children’s Book of 2018 NO KIMCHI FOR ME). Both call Queens, NYC home and it is here that they meet and collaborate to grow Cici's story seed about a new neighborhood superhero: Electric Kitty! Follow along as they introduce us to Electric Kitty who has the superpower to shoot laser beams of light to fight bad guys, but when she isn't busy saving the world — she's a regular cat who can be found curled up in a quintessential Queens bodega, eating her favorite snack, salami!
On this bonus episode, our host Betsy Bird and Chris Grabenstein chat about growing Jasper’s giant story seed into the original story "The World's Biggest Detective." You’ll also get writing tips, imagination improv exercises, and hear how Chris Grabenstein became the best-selling author of multiple award-winning and New York Times bestselling page-turners for kids, including the fast-paced, fun, and funny Mr. Lemoncello's Library series.
This week’s episode features Chris Grabenstein, author of the NYTimes best-selling "Mr. Lemoncello's Library" series, and his story seeds match Jasper. Jasper’s story idea is about a 74 foot tall detective (talk about being well equipped for extreme social distancing) and how he *ahem* turns lemons into lemonade by using his height to see things that others can’t. Join host Betsy Bird as she takes you to collaboration nation with Chris and Jasper, and unveils the brand new original story that Chris grew: “The World’s Biggest Detective.”
On this bonus episode, host Betsy Bird and Veera Hiranandani chat about the parallels between Veera's childhood school experiences and those of Willa's story seed. You’ll also get some writing tips from the Newbery Honor-winning author!
