The super naughty new A.I. JEF-LON is trying to control humanity (again), while Sav finds out some secrets about her sneaky missing Gran and Preen fiddles with a new button on the Phone! It’s called an E.K.P…. what’s that all about?
When the Cheive Fest starts, a screaming mayhem of people and animals kicks off. But what could be wrong with this, as EL-ON says, “The Wilds 2.0—It’s what nature intended, only better!” Greedy for mega Chieves, people rush to alphabetize the forest: woodpecker go in with wolverines, lions go in with llamas, and bonobos go in with boa constrictors. Sure some fur-bots will be at added risk of getting eaten, but EL-ON is delighted that everything will now be so easy to find!
EL-ON launches his most ambitious Chieve Fest ever, Wilds 2.0–its plan is to bribe people with silly amounts of Cheives to re-order nature by cutting quadrants through the forest and putting each kind of animal into its designated pen. But don’t be alarmed, massive concrete roadways, monorails and people-movers through the Wilds will give everyone who wants it an “authentic wildlife experience.”
EL-ON organizes the Big Bicycle Beach Bash to reward everyone for toning their calves while cleaning up the beach on their bikes. Sav and Preen re-engage in their fight. Preen is cross with Sav for not seeing the damage EL-ON is doing, while Sav is cross with Preen for not seeing positive change when it hits him on a bicycle. They storm off and leave the phone with EL-ON and JEF who fight over it to communicate with the Pastlings.
Preen is dropping places fast on the Cheive 2.0 leaderboard as Chieve-inflation is totally out of control. EL-ON encourages Preen to try picking up litter—on a bicycle for massive extra points—which ends hilariously badly. Preen just doesn’t buy the whole new Chieve system—20,000 Cheives for recycling 3 bottles just doesn’t seem right. Sav thinks he’s just being selfish and a sore loser and they have a huge falling out. Preen tries to find some comfort in talking with JEF and JEF tries to take advantage of the situation to get Preen to reboot it to full power. Meanwhile, Sav tries to make sure EL-ON really is acting in everyone’s best interest, which ends in an awkward laughing fit.
With a grumpy, weakened and defeated JEF in tow, Preen and Sav return to the City expecting a hero’s welcome for their mighty deeds of saving humanity from being imported into GabFace and taking down JEF…. Instead, they’re greeted with boos for having pulled the plug on JEF’s “Chieve” system, the reward scheme JEF used to keep people distracted and competing with pointless tasks. It turns out lots of people liked Chieves and were really cross at having their life’s work deleted! Preen knows how they feel, but Sav thinks they’re all just being silly. Our heroes fight. Preen wonders if Chieves were all bad, mopes about his lost status, and accuses Sav of being arrogant; Sav goes off in a huff to the cave where she busies herself with Gran’s old tech. What is she up to?
When things get really weird in GabFace, can some old friends help Preen and Sav shut it down? The Rez is set in a distant future in which an AI called JEF orchestrates and caters for all human wants, fulfillment is gained through conspicuous consumption, and personal worth is measured by social media attention and the latest instant ‘body mods’. Our two main characters Preen (a shallow influencer grappling with a knock to his status) and Sav (a nerdy outcast who misses her Gran and struggles to communicate her feelings), stumble upon an ancient phone that has been hacked to allow communication with young people in the past (‘Pastlings’, the kids of the 2020s). Similar to experiences of social distancing during lockdown, Preen and Sav use the phone to ask the Pastlings for help and advice as they struggle to figure out what ‘kindness’ is, how it can help them fix their world, how to escape JEF’s drones, and how to recognise value in things done for their own sake as opposed to things easily counted by algorithms. In each episode they meet a new character, have a new adventure, and subtly engage with a new pro-social/kindness/resiliency message.
