In The Rat King, the story picks up where Cat City left off. Susan has been having bad dreams, and without Tucker there to comfort her, she fears something terrible has happened. Tucker has been ordered to stay in Cat City and fulfill his duty as a gatekeeper, but it feels like the council is trying to keep him from his friend. Susan's nightmares turn out to be real, and when Tucker discovers that Susan has been kidnapped by their enemies, he tries to rally help from the cats. But if anyone is going to save her, it's going to have to be him! With the Rat King ready to attack and an old enemy still plotting to take over Cat City, it's up to Susan and Tucker to save the cats from their enemy once more.

Susan made a huge discovery in the book that Albert took her to see. She is unsure how she can help the cats now but is determined to do everything she can.
The rats have been defeated, and Susan has found Tucker. Khai tells Susan there is still much to do, but she doesn’t want to hear it.
Susan went through the gate but only opened it enough for herself to get through. The rats are still on the other side, and they are not happy. Khai helps Susan take what the rats need.
Susan has spoken to the Council and made them see what she is talking about. When a cat arrives and tells them the Rats are at the gate, they go to see what they can do.
Tucker is safe after the cave-in but knows he needs to get back to the city. He is trying to find his way but the further he goes the more he realizes he is lost. When he sees some rats marching he follows them, hoping not to be seen.
Susan and Vinnie are at the council, but they are having no luck trying to convince the cats to help. The cats don’t believe anything Susan and Vinnie say. Susan finally realizes the truth and what she can see and then does something no one was expecting.
Susan is okay after the rock falls, but she doesn’t know how Tucker is and cannot feel him. She has decided the best thing for her to do is to continue with their plan. Susan sees a flicker of light around a corner and decides to see where it is coming from.
