S3 E5: The Big Melt – We love the North
00:27:37 | Season: 3 | Episode: 5 | June 23rd, 2020

Remember last week I talked about arctic foxes, and how they have been disappearing from the southern edge of the tundra around the globe? It happens because arctic foxes lose their habitat and THAT happens because of climate change. Changes in global weather is causing the sea ice to shrink. It also changes the tundra because more and more plants and animal species from the south can invade further into the north so the tundra is becoming more like shrublands or woodlands. That’s bad news for the arctic foxes and other arctic animals because they need the sea ice and the tundra to survive! My best friend, Sarah, actually makes a podcast about climate change called ‘The Big Melt’, and she made a specific episode on how climate change affects animals in the arctic, animals like arctic foxes and ringed seals. Cathedral of trees – the Forest of Dean (part 1)
43:17 | Episode: 17 | June 21st, 2020

About a kilometre into the forest we left the microphones strapped to the trunk of a huge ancient tree. The spot was well off the beaten path and opened onto a natural clearing with a cathedral like acoustic sound. This recording starts just after 9pm to capture the sound of twilight turning to dark. At 33m there’s an owl. More at 40m. Then the strange call of a woodcock.
